How to invite someone to church in 4 simple steps – A Word from Dr. Mike

Thom Rainer wrote a book titled The Unchurched Next Door. He wrote that 82% of our friends and family who never attend a worship service are at least somewhat likely to attend if invited. Rainer, who conducted extensive research, including polling unchurched people, discovered that 7 out of 10 unchurched people (70%) have never been invited to church ever.

Easter provides us with the greatest opportunity to invite people to a Sunday morning worship service. So, let’s do it! Let’s invite people to attend public worship on Easter Sunday, April 9. Let’s be especially sensitive to inviting people who are going through a crisis/serious trial in his/her life. During this season, people are more open to being invited.

I really like the story of Philip and Nathanael in John 1. In verse 45, GOD’s Word says “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote – JESUS of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” In verse 46, “Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

COME AND SEE. Philip extends a personal invitation to Nathanael to “come and see” JESUS.

In John 4, JESUS brought salvation to the woman at the well – the woman who “had 5 husbands, and the one who you now have is not your husband. “After her conversation with JESUS, according to verses 28-29, “The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, “Come and see a Man who told me all things that I ever did.”

So, let’s invite people on Easter Sunday to “come and see.” Here are the steps we need to take:

1. Invite the person/persons to “come and see.”

2. If your invitee has never stepped inside a church building, he/she will have a lot of apprehension/anxiety. So, ask if they have any questions about coming. Prepare them for the visit.

3. Meet them when they arrive. Let your invitee know that you will be waiting for them. If they have children, assist them to getting them where they belong.

4. After the worship service, text or call them later in the day to say, “thank you for attending.”

Join with me in praying in advance for all the unchurched people who will attend our 9:00 am or 11:00 am worship service. Pray for lives to be transformed by JESUS. After all, He declared in John 11: 25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
