Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a declares, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die.” For Sara Adkison, the time to be born was February 19, 1931, and her time to die was Saturday, January 6, 2023.
Sara was born and raised in Texas. She was raised in a Christian home, and she came to know JESUS as her personal Savior very early in her life. When she graduated from high school, Sara attended Hardin-Simmons Baptist University. She was active in Youth for CHRIST. During her time in college, Sara Fleming met E. Lewis Adkison. They married on December 29, 1953.
Upon graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Adkisons moved to Colorado and planted the First Baptist Church of Security. They served the church from 1958-1968. In April of 1968, the Adkisons moved their membership to Circle Drive Baptist Church. Dr. Adkison served as senior pastor from 1968-2000. Sara was a member of our church for 55 years.
GOD blessed the Adkisons with 3 children: Tony, Traci, and Timothy. Lewis and Sara were married for 68 years.
It has been my privilege and joy to be Sara’s pastor for the past 22 years, although quite a few those years Dr. Adkison served JESUS through pulpit supply and interim pastor of 11 local churches.
Here is my reflections on the Sara Adkison I knew.
First, Sara loved the LORD JESUS. Being saved early in life, she devoted her life to living for JESUS. I am reminded of Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with CHRIST; it is no longer I who live, but CHRIST lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of GOD, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
Second, Sara loved her husband and her family. Genesis 2:18 says, “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Sara was “just right” for “Preach.” Sara supported her husband, prayed for him, and was a devoted wife and faithful ministry partner throughout their marriage. She truly was a Proverbs 31 Christian woman. Verse 10 states, “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.”
Third, Sara loved the church. She loved to serve JESUS and people in the church’s to which she belonged. Her life truly made a difference in GOD’s Kingdom work through the years. Colossians 3:23-24 declares: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Sara Adkison lived this verse throughout her life.
Sara Adkison finished her race with grace and with faithfulness. JESUS declared in Revelation 2:10b, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” She certainly heard these words when she entered the “gates of heaven”:
‘Well done, my good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
I praise GOD for the life of Sara Adkison: for the life she lived, the difference she made in GOD’s Kingdom work, and the legacy of faith she left behind.
